About the Forest City
Early settlers called Rockford the "Forest City" because of the river valley's lush woods. The nickname first appeared in the "New York Tribune" back in 1853. There are 44 individual forest preserves in Winnebago County with 11,503 acres of protected land for the use and enjoyment of the general public.
